About This Spot

Stepping into Union Drive Marketplace, you’re greeted by a vibrant, bustling energy that feels unmistakably tied to its place right at the heart of Ames’ campus life. Amid the steady chatter and laughter of students weaving between tables, there’s an easygoing rhythm here — a space where quick grabs and lingering meals blend naturally, fueled by hunger and community alike.

This buffet-style restaurant offers a casual haven from the whirl of classes and campus errands, where comfort meets variety in an unpretentious way. The mood is lively yet familiar — a place where you might find yourself savoring a stack of warm pancakes topped with whipped cream or settling in with a plate of hearty taco fillings, the kind that invite relaxed conversation between bites. The atmosphere is less about precision and polish and more about honest satisfaction and the joy of sharing a meal amid a lively crowd.

Part of its charm lies in the welcoming expansiveness — a nod to the need to feed a bustling student population, which means plentiful choices, from classic fried favorites to unexpected twists like green wraps or fresh peppers adding a burst of color and flavor. You’ll see groups gathered around tables, trading tastes and stories, with the background hum of the cafeteria’s pace forming a unique soundtrack. Even the desserts find their place here, inviting spoonfuls of sweet relief after a savory journey.

Union Drive Marketplace doesn’t aim for refined haute cuisine, but it’s this earnest, generous spirit that makes it a memorable local fixture. Whether you’re stopping in for a relaxed breakfast, a midday refuel, or a casual dinner, there’s a human warmth to the experience — reminders of the shared rhythms and everyday moments that quietly define a community’s heartbeat.

"We have to feed like a million college students, if we create enough food to literally bury them regardless of quality, they'll be happy, right?" - UDCC management (for real though, busiest place to eat on campus but still pretty good. Except the pizza, it's 1/3 crust and only okay because even they can't screw up pizza)

There is a good variety of food available here. They had Sushi Fridays till last semester (Fall 2020), don't know about the next semesters. The desserts include cookies and different kinds of brownies or cakes which are very tasty. Love the place
